What is Supported housing?
Supported housing normally comprises a group of either self contained flats or a shared house with communal facilities which is intended for accommodation, support and care for a particular vulnerable group of customers. Examples of this are persons recovering from a mental illness or persons fleeing domestic violence.
The accommodation provided is on a temporary basis with a view to the tenant obtaining support and being able to live more independently after an initial period.
Management Arrangement
The supported housing scheme will normally have a housing and support officer who is responsible for providing the support to the tenants. The care is usually provided through external agencies such as partnering associations or social services.
Communal Facilities
Communal facilities will vary from one supported housing scheme to another. Examples of facilities in place at some schemes are as follows:
- Common room with TV/Video
- Telephone
- Washing machine
- Communal gardens
