Minister visits Asra sheltered housing scheme

Local Government Minister Phil Woolas visited sheltered housing scheme ‘Sabarmati House’ in Leicester operated by Asra Midlands so that he could see first-hand the benefits of the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Supporting People programme which has provided funding for the scheme.

Part of Sanctuary Housing Group, Asra Midlands provides support for people with an Asian lifestyle and others in need of accommodation across a range of housing-based programmes including, sheltered housing, residential care, family housing and schemes for women fleeing domestic violence.

The home’s 36 residents live in purpose-built self-contained flats. Their ages range from 60 to 90 years old they all keep themselves active – one practices the Japanese healing technique known as Reike as well as carrying out voluntary work at Glenfield Hospital, Leicester.

Each flat and the communal areas are linked to Asra Midland’s 24 hour multilingual contact centre, which means that help is available at any time it is needed, together with a resident Housing Support Officer who is on call 24 hours a day.

Phil Woolas, Minister for Local Government said: “Asra provides an important service, helping people across the Midlands to live in their own homes and within their own communities and I applaud what they have achieved.

“I see helping the most vulnerable people in our society, people who may be homeless, or in housing difficulties, as a top priority. The Supporting People programme is instrumental in the Government’s drive to tackling social exclusion and enabling society’s most vulnerable people sustain independent lives.”
