2007 is the bicentenary of the Parliamentary Bill passed to abolish the slave trade in the former British Empire. The anniversary is an opportunity to discuss critical strategies for encouraging inclusion, valuing diversity and looking at the challenges that remain to create and sustain a truly diverse nation. This is something that no organisation can afford to remain complacent about. One of the actions of the Advisory Group on the Bicentenary, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, was to support the production of Diverse Britain 2007 – the changing face of a nation which attempts to tell the story of diversity in the UK, presenting an historical overview as well as the views of organisation’s endeavouring to understand, address and reflect social diversity within their institutions.
