Modernisation of Hackney Estate

In March 1999, Sanctuary Housing Association took over 1158 properties in Hackney following a stock transfer from the London Borough of Hackney. They immediately began work on a £40m regeneration and modernisation programme which was finally complete in May 2005.

Sanctuary was selected to carry out the works following a successful ballot of the tenants. The scheme was designed to bring new life to four of Hackney's most run down estates, namely Old Kingshold, Morningside, Shore and Old Gascoyne estates.

£40million regeneration and modernisation programme

The refurbishment programme involved the total renewal of kitchens, bathrooms, and front doors in over 1000 units, installation of double-glazed windows, new central heating where required, improved security and lighting, and extensive external works to the environment of the estates along with a host of other improvements.
