Sanctuary Housing appointed as developer on new £30m student accommodation in East Lothian

Sanctuary Housing has just been awarded a £30m project from Queen Margaret University College (QMUC) to develop and construct 800 new halls of residence at the college’s brand new campus in East Lothian, Scotland.

Sanctuary Group, one of the UK’s leading housing associations, will develop this major contract on part of the university’s new 35 acre academic site at Craighall, Musselburgh in a scheme which is designed to house students in contemporary, state-of-the-art accommodation.

Sanctuary’s appointed contractor, Miller Construction, commenced work on site on 16th January 2006.

In addition to the initial construction work, Sanctuary will also provide (through its facilities management division Sanctuary Management Services) day-to-day FM and maintenance services for the halls of residence over a 35 year contract term which will generate further income for the organisation.

Hilary Gardner, Sanctuary’s Commercial Director commented: “We are delighted to have been appointed by Queen Margaret University College to develop and manage the new student accommodation on this important new academic site.

“The construction and long term management of university accommodation is one of Sanctuary’s key growth areas and this latest contract further consolidates our position in this sector.”

Brian McQuade, Miller Construction’s Regional Director added: “Miller Construction has extensive experience in providing design and build solutions for the education sector and we look forward, with our supply chain, to providing first-class residential accommodation for Sanctuary and the students at QMUC.

“We are proud to have been involved over the last year with our client, Sanctuary Housing, in developing the design and build solution for the student residences. We are also pleased to have swiftly concluded our appointment with Sanctuary and commenced the building operations on site as programmed.”
