Community Gather for Opening of New Centre

Opening of new centre

Residents of Bickley, Bromley were in the party spirit this weekend as they celebrated the conversion of a formerly derelict community hall in to a modern community centre, packed with facilities for both young and old.

The event, hosted by Sanctuary Housing on Saturday 30th May, marked the culmination of nearly a years work at the site in Wood Lodge Gardens. The centre was officially opened by Woodlodge Youth Group member, Evan Oloya and PC Gary Darke from Bickley & Bromley Metropolitan Police.

The new facility occupies the old community hall building which had been disused for over 15 years. Brought back to life by Sanctuary Housing’s maintenance team, work included major roof repairs, refurbishment of the kitchen, installation of a state-of-the-art alarm and electrical rewiring as well as new fitted carpets.

The Metropolitan Police in Bickley generously provided the entertainment facilities, which include a pool table, games consoles, TVs and DJ and recording equipment for the younger residents. The youngsters will not be the only ones having fun at the new centre; older residents will also be able to enjoy regular coffee mornings and activities

"...the residents are so happy and can’t wait for all the fun..."

Sanctuary Housing and the local police team have also worked with locals to help set up a residents’ association and youth group. Both groups hope that the new facilities will play a major role in bringing the community together.

Naz Porter, Sanctuary’s resident involvement officer said: “We hope that this community centre will serve as a focal point for the residents. These new facilities will help reduce antisocial behaviour in the area and give residents, young and old somewhere to meet and socialise.

Resident, Tracey Kelly added: "We didn’t think that the re-opening would happen! Now it has, the residents are so happy and can’t wait for all the fun to come here in the future."
