Explosive Ending for Last of the Ardler Blocks

The last of Ardler’s dilapidated tower blocks were demolished in seconds on Saturday (June 23rd) following a controlled explosion at the site.

Sanctuary Scotland is replacing the 298 flats in the 17-storey Baberton, Barassie and Carnoustie blocks with new homes as part of its seven-year regeneration project.

A staggering forty kilos of high explosives were used in 1,040 individual detonations to demolish the buildings, taking just 1.1 seconds to complete.

Almost 200 households and 500 people, including residents at a care home, were evacuated for the work to be carried out by Safedem.

The rubble will soon be replaced with eight new homes for rent from Sanctuary Scotland and 50 homes for sale with Spiral Developments, another subsidiary of Sanctuary Housing Group. The development of the site marks the last phase in the Ardler Village project.
