Children with the mural at Langtoft Road

A large mural has brightened up the scheme, which has been painted by residents and local wildlife artist Helen Shackleton. Fencing has also been installed to make for a safer area for children to play in.

Sanctuary Shaftesbury, a subsidiary of Sanctuary Group, contributed £3,500 towards the mural project, to brighten up a large, unsightly concrete area.

The mural arose following Sanctuary asking residents how they would like to enhance the scheme. They decided it should be bright and inspire learning, so it features a giraffe two meters tall, for children to measure themselves against to inspire learning. It also incorporates football and rain forest themes.

Local resident, Tina Baker said: “The mural looks fantastic, it’s really eye-catching and brightens up the area no end. Thanks to everyone involved, they’ve done a great job.”

Peter Brierley, Sanctuary Shaftesbury’s community development officer, said: “The area has been something of an eyesore in the past, which is why Sanctuary decided to do something about it.

“It has encouraged residents to work together for the good of the community and I’m sure the mural will prove to be a great investment, as it will transform the area for the better.”
