Hyde Park residents say ‘yes’ to Sanctuary

Residents of Hyde Park Walk and Terrace in Sheffield have voted to transfer their homes to Sanctuary Housing Association.

Sheffield City Council balloted 170 tenants from the estate and the result, announced on February 5, revealed that an overwhelming number of tenants were in support of the proposals - 75 per cent of those that voted were in favour of transferring their homes to Sanctuary Housing from the council. The turnout was the highest ever for a stock transfer in Sheffield with almost 80 per cent of residents casting their vote.

The 136 two and three bedroom flats which overlook the city centre will be transferred in June this year. The properties are managed by the Alpha Tenant Management Co-op, who currently operates on behalf of Sheffield City Council. Sanctuary has agreed that the co-op should continue under a new management agreement.

Brian Manning, chair of Alpha TMC, said: “I am delighted that we will be joining Sanctuary as I believe this will be the best way to guarantee our future. We have been working very closely with Sanctuary over the past year and look forward to developing our plans to improve properties and offer even better services to tenants living on Hyde Park.”

Bob Wilson, director of Sanctuary North, added: “This positive result sends the clear message that tenants are confident in Sanctuary’s ability to provide them with the promised package of improvements. This is a wonderful opportunity to work with a co-operative and this new partnership will benefit all parties involved, but most importantly, the tenants and the local community.”

Tenants helped decide what improvements would be made during a series of open days and meetings throughout last year. Sanctuary will spend over £1m on the properties in the first two years, modernising kitchens and bathrooms, as well as improving security and safety on the estate. Tenants’ key rights will be protected and rents will remain affordable in line with government policy.

Karl Tupling, Sheffield City Council’s director of housing, said: “
Tenants and residents of Hyde Park told us that they wanted to guarantee a good standard of investment now and into the future and felt that the best way to secure this was stock transfer.

“This yes vote shows tenants have listened to the proposal and made an informed decision to transfer. The council will now work with Sanctuary to make sure the transfer is a success and that Hyde Park tenants get the homes they deserve.”
