In today’s world, most people are aware of the issue of climate change, whereby increased greenhouse gas emissions are leading to an overall rise in average global temperatures. This in turn is having devastating and possibly irreversible effects around the world. Without some action now, the future is looking unpredictable.
A recent report called “An Inefficient Truth” illustrates the environmental impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and highlights the fact that the sector’s carbon footprint is equal to that of the aviation industry. The report urges businesses to evaluate and improve the efficiency of existing ICT infrastructures to avoid future legislation.
So what is Sanctuary currently doing about it?
- Wyse Winterms and Citrix require around 90% less power than PCs and help to reduce the need for site visits.
- Duplex printing provides the ability to print on both sides, therefore reducing the amount of paper needed to print a document by half.
- Video conferencing and telephone conferencing reduce travel requirements.
- Flexible working also helps to reduce the need for travel through the use of Citrix Access Gateway (CAG) and Blackberry devices.
- Maximising server efficiency through investment in blade servers and cutting edge cooling technology.
Many of the issues highlighted in “An Inefficient Truth” are already being successfully addressed by the Computer Services department, giving Sanctuary a head start in the drive for a more efficient ICT provision. This benefits the Group by reducing overall costs, provides a reliable and flexible ICT infrastructure and meets the ‘green’ targets that are becoming more and more important in modern day life.
