University College Worcester project

Sanctuary has been awarded the contract for the creation of the blueprint, which will transform the five-acre former Worcester hospital site in Castle Street (opposite head office) into a state of the art facility to act as a second, city-based campus for University College Worcester.

The £100m development is planned to include a conference centre, computer facilities, restaurants, student accommodation, new lecture halls, modern research facilities, and an integrated University and public library and information centre. All facilities being designed to be completely accessible for disabled people.

The Principal of UCW, Professor David Green, said out of the 143 applicants which made a bid for this project, it was the creative track record and experience of Sanctuary Housing and its partners, combined with value for money that offered the winning qualities.

Sanctuary’s partners for this project will be Capita Percy Thomas Architects and property and construction company McBains Cooper.

£100m landmark development

Hilary Gardner, Commercial Director for Sanctuary, said the Castle Street site would be a “landmark development”. “It will be an opportunity to create a new type of modern university campus in the centre of Worcester to meet the educational, economic and cultural needs of the region,” she said. “We look forward to developing further our partnership with University College Worcester.”

Once the master plan is complete a series of other contracts will be made available. These will include the refurbishment of the site’s listed buildings and listed interior features.

The predicted timescale for the completion of the early phases of the Castle Street development is 2007- 2008.
