Sanctuary - first housing association to gain TPAS accreditation

Residents have been helping Sanctuary Housing Group celebrate the news that it has become the first landlord in the country to gain accreditation with the Tenant Participatory Advisory Service (TPAS).

Sanctuary Housing Group residents were congratulated by Chief Executive of TPAS Phil Morgan, who presented Sanctuary’s Group Managing Director David Bennett with a plaque to commemorate this landmark achievement at a presentation ceremony at Sanctuary House, Worcester.

The quality mark shows that Sanctuary has proved its commitment to resident engagement and met the high standards set by TPAS, the leading national tenant participation organisation which promotes tenant empowerment. Its aim is to extend the reach and quality of tenant influence by working with social housing residents and landlords to develop successful partnerships with residents.

The process, which began in May, involved working closely with residents, Sanctuary employees and TPAS assessors to demonstrate meaningful resident involvement. Sanctuary had to carry out a self-assessment, before being review by independent assessors who visited and interviewed staff at several Sanctuary’s sites across the country, including the Weston Foyer, Beth Johnson’s Stoke offices and the Group’s Head Office in Worcester.

Sanctuary’s Group Managing Director David Bennett said: “This accreditation marks an important milestone in Sanctuary’s 37-year history, but more than that, it marks the beginning of a new era for residents, setting a new standard by which all housing associations should be judged.

”It demonstrates our commitment to listening to our residents and ensuring that their voices are heard, and proves that regardless of the size of the organisation, residents can be placed at the heart of an association’s work”

TPAS Chief Executive Phil Morgan said: “This marks an important step forward in tenant and resident involvement. We have witnessed a little slice of history with Sanctuary Housing Association becoming the first landlord to achieve the accreditation standard set by TPAS.

He added: “Sanctuary does involve tenants successfully, has a clear link between service improvement and resident involvement and has the culture, commitment and strategy in place to further improve.”
