Sanctuary Housing staff get on their bike!

With the cost of petrol and parking at an all time high, Sanctuary Housing Association recently teamed up with Worcestershire County Council in a ‘drive’ to improve daily journeys to work.

Sanctuary Housing invited their Worcester-based staff, together with those from neighbouring businesses, to a special ‘Travel Awareness Day’ at their city centre head office where visitors were given advice on the best ways of commuting in the area.

Worcestershire County Council hosted a stand at Sanctuary’s event which included details of public transport, park and ride schemes, personal travel plans and a full demonstration of the Car Share database which allows individuals to match journey requirements and arrange car sharing with others.

Said Craig Moule, Group Finance and Resources Director: “By supporting sustainable transport and providing staff with access to personal travel plans, we hope to relieve some of the stress they experience in their daily journeys to work.”

One of the highlights of the event was the cycle ‘taster training’ offered by BikeWorks, who provide cycling support systems for the workplace including commuter cycling training. This saw Sanctuary’s visitor car park turned into a race track as staff put tandems, fold-away bikes and a funky hand-powered tricycle through their paces.

In support of sustainable transport, and with the aid of a grant from the Council, Sanctuary is currently installing some new bike racks on site.
