Sanctuary and Sheffield City Council unveil extra care scheme

Sanctuary Housing Association and Sheffield City Council have unveiled plans for a £9.3million extra care scheme in Sheffield which will create approximately 30 new jobs.

Current plans are to build 80 two-bedroom flats, each with its own lounge and bathroom, at the Roman Ridge development at Wincobank. The flats are supplemented by communal facilities such as a kitchen and restaurant, activity lounges and an office suite for carers. All the flats will be backed up by a sophisticated ‘telecare’ emergency call system.

The scheme of self-contained flats will enable older people to live independently for longer, with support from staff who are on site 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These high quality services include domestic help, shopping, food preparation and social support.

The joint project with the city council has been made possible following last week’s announcement by Ivan Lewis MP, under secretary of state for care services, that £5m would be allocated to the Roman Ridge extra care scheme. Work is expected to begin on the site in early 2008 and the estimated completion date is summer 2009.

Plans unveiled for a £9.3million extra care scheme in Sheffield creating approximately 30 new jobs.

Bob Wilson, Director of Sanctuary North, said: “We are delighted to receive the support from the Department of Health and we look forward to working in partnership with Sheffield City Council to provide high quality affordable homes for local people.”

Cllr Mick Rooney, cabinet member for Adult Services on Sheffield City Council said: “We are very pleased to have been successful in this funding bid, which means we are one step nearer to our goal of delivering extra care housing across the city.

“The schemes we are already running have been very popular and so many people are experiencing a much improved quality of life in our extra care schemes through having their health and social needs met on site.”

The majority of the accommodation will be available to rent but there are also several properties to buy through leasehold and shared ownership.
