Sanctuary begins building care centre at Wantage
 

Work began this week on Sanctuary Housing Group’s new 50 bedroom nursing care centre in Wantage.

Abingdon-based company Leadbitter, who built Sanctuary Care’s flagship Watlington and District Nursing Home in 2004, will construct the £3.2 million project and work is expected to be completed by January 2008. The new centre will create 50 full and part-time jobs.

The facility, run by Sanctuary Care, will provide care for older people needing nursing, intermediate services and dementia services, as well as housing a domiciliary resource base from which Sanctuary Home Care will support people in the area. Local people will be given priority for places at the centre.

The project is a joint venture between Sanctuary Housing Group, Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust and Wantage Nursing Home Charitable Trust (WNHCT), who have leased the site to Sanctuary for 125 years.

£3.2 million project and work is expected to be completed by January 2008.

Steve Wood, Managing Director of Sanctuary Care, said: “Sanctuary Care is delighted to be involved in this project which will provide state-of-the-art care facilities for older people in Wantage and supplement existing services available at the hospital. It is the second of our collaborative projects in Oxfordshire, being based on a highly successful model that enabled us to open the Watlington and District Nursing Centre in 2004.”

Paul Abson, Main Board Director of Leadbitter Construction, said: “Leadbitter is delighted to have been chosen as contractor partner to construct Sanctuary’s prestigious care scheme in Wantage. Our dedicated team is looking forward to delivering a high quality scheme and repeating the success achieved in Watlington.”

The three trustees, Sir Adrian Swire, Thomas Loyd and Jenny Hannaby, are delighted that their plan to bring a nursing home to the people of Wantage is now becoming a reality after three years of negotiations and planning with the PCT.

Said Jenny Hannaby: “The trustees are confident that Sanctuary Care will build a care home that the residents of Wantage can be proud of.”
