The inspirational ‘Sanctuary in Music’ project has been shortlisted for a celebrated National Housing Federation ‘What we are proud of’ award.
Funded by leading UK housing association Sanctuary Group, the project has been shortlisted in the Yorkshire and Humberside regional section and, if successful, will go forward to the National Housing Federation’s national finals. The award scheme celebrates housing association-run projects that have improved the lives of people in their community.
The project, which started in Hull and is led by musician and Sanctuary resident Johnny Paterson, gives social housing tenants across the country the chance to develop their singing talents, build confidence and improve self-esteem over a series of 26-week workshops. It also equips them with the vital skills which can lead towards employment – including in the entertainments’ industry.
The winner of the regional section will be announced at an awards ceremony on 6th June, at the National Railway Museum in York.
If successful, the project will then be shortlisted with eight other regional winners for the national award, which will be announced at the National Housing Federation’s Annual Conference at the Birmingham ICC in September.
Nick Abbey, Sanctuary’s Group Director - Housing said: “Sanctuary in Music is an innovative project that is helping transform the lives of residents in communities across the country.
“To be shortlisted for this National Housing Federation award is testament to Johnny’s great efforts and the positive impact the project is having on our residents.”
The project has also been recognised by Inside Housing where Johnny Paterson has been nominated for one of their Housing Heroes Awards. He is one of six finalists in the running for ‘Inspirational Tenant of the Year’ accolade which will be announced at an awards ceremony in June.
