Sanctuary lends Samaritans a helping hand

Sanctuary Housing Group has responded to Worcester Samaritans’ plea for funds to install a new 21st century telephone system at their branch.

The national charity, founded in 1953, handles five million calls, e-mails, letters and face-to-face contacts annually. The overall number of contacts at Worcester Samaritans rose 24 per cent during 2006 to 17,496. An e-mail service is already in place and the charity is currently piloting text messaging but an upgraded telephone system would enable Worcester Samaritans to effectively link these facilities.

"We hope our donation of £500 will go some way towards the cost of the Samaritans’ new communications system"

Samaritans is available 24 hours a day, providing confidential, emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide.

A major local employer, with 150 staff at its Worcester head office, Sanctuary provides a range of social housing, including accommodation for the homeless and more vulnerable members of society .

Group Chief Executive of Sanctuary Housing David Bennett said: “Because we work closely with residents, we have an insight into the difficulties and stresses that some individuals experience. This is why we recognise and value the service the Samaritans provide.

”We hope our donation of £500 will go some way towards the cost of the Samaritans’ new communications system and will inspire others to support this worthwhile cause.”

Michael Shrubb, deputy director of Worcester Samaritans, said: “I am delighted at the support we have received from Sanctuary and the donation will go towards replacing our out of date telephone system. This money will allow us to provide services that would bring us into the 21st century.”

Worcester Samaritans is completely self-funding and relies on volunteers. It runs a 24-hour confidential telephone service on 08457 909090 and provides drop-in facilities 9am-10pm every day at its Sansome Walk offices. People can also e-mail jo@samaritans.org.
