Sanctuary Group staff took to the chilly waters of the river Severn to raise money for charity Leukaemia CARE in Race the Dragon 2008 on Sunday 22nd June.
Over 30 Sanctuary employees, in two teams, from the Group’s Worcester-based head office paddled it out against 19 other crews in the 18th annual regatta, organised by Worcester Dragon Boat Racing Club.
Both Sanctuary teams gave their all on the water during an action packed day of competition and despite not returning home victorious, the crew members’ efforts helped raise a tremendous £1,000 for Leukaemia CARE.
One of the Sanctuary team captains Roger Smith said it was fantastic for Sanctuary staff to come together in aid of charity.
He added: “The whole event was about taking part, having fun and raising money for a good cause. Both crews got plenty of support from family, friends, colleagues and other crew members cheering from the river bank. Many of us hope to enter a team next year.”
Gemma Harris, marketing officer for Leukaemia CARE, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Sanctuary Group and all their participating staff and supporters. It’s thanks to motivated groups and individuals like these that the charity can continue to offer its eight key care and support services to patients, carers and families affected by blood cancer, as the charity receives no government or lottery funding.”
