Sanctuary has promised to invest £91 million in the first five years to upgrade homes well above the government’s minimum “decent homes standard.” Tenants helped decide what improvements would be made during a series of open days and meetings during this year.

Work will include new kitchens, bathrooms, energy efficient central heating systems, upgraded wiring and new internal and external doors. Sanctuary will also improve the environment and safety on the estate including a crack-down on anti-social behaviour.

Sanctuary has promised that tenants’ key rights will be protected and rents will remain affordable in line with government policy.

Karl Tupling, Sheffield City Council head of housing strategy, said: “Tenants and residents’ representatives in Shiregreen told us they wanted ‘the full works’. They wanted a high level of improvements that could only be done through stock transfer to a housing association.

“This yes vote shows tenants have listened to the proposal and made an informed decision to transfer. The council will now work with Sanctuary to make sure the transfer is a success and that Shiregreen tenants get the homes they deserve.”
