Timber Close community day

Buffet lunch

Residents and staff from Sanctuary Shaftesbury, a member of leading housing provider Sanctuary Group, joined in the fun to celebrate the Timber Close community day at the general rented scheme in St Austell, Cornwall.

A variety of entertainment included a drumming workshop by local percussion outfit The Big Beat, a buffet lunch, plus the opportunity for children to make their own smoothies while keeping fit, thanks to a smoothie bike provided by Health Promotion.

Sanctuary contributed £600 to help stage the community day, which was a great chance for Timber Close residents and staff members to get to know each other, along with members of Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change and The Children’s Centre (St Austell) and Serco.

The day was also a valuable opportunity to talk to local children and find out what they think of where they live.

"Today was loads of fun, there was lots of nice food"

Sanctuary is currently consulting with residents about improving the outdoor environment at Timber Close, including the children’s play area and development of the communal space around the flats.

A Dreamscheme project is also planned during the summer holidays, which will give children the chance to earn rewards, such as days out in exchange for working to help improve the estate for the whole community.

Young resident, Jack Craddock, said: “Today was loads of fun, there was lots of nice food and it was good to learn about the Dreamscheme, I can’t wait!”

Michael Howarth, Sanctuary Shaftesbury’s community development officer said: “It was great to hear ideas from the local children for the forthcoming Dreamscheme, both for the tasks they could complete & the rewards they might like in return. The day also provided an opportunity to share details of the environmental improvements planned for the play area.”
