Well Street Common May Festival Football Tournament

Well Street Common in South Hackney resonated with the sounds of football cheering and action when the sixth annual May Festival Football Tournament took place. Although it was raining, the showers only seemed to add to the atmosphere.

The 24 team tournament is run by Alex Brown of Y2K Community Sports and sponsored by Sanctuary Housing. The event has established a solid reputation for bringing people together from across the Hackney estates, as organiser Derek Smith explained.

“The tournament is a true inter-estate enterprise and brings young people together to demonstrate their skills and enthusiasm. Apart from the health benefits there are other spin-offs too and it is really brilliant to see the friendliness and spirit of good sportsmanship on the day,” he said.

Sanctuary sponsors successful football tournament.

Teams from most of the Sanctuary Estates in South Hackney, including Morningside, Gascoyne and VADCH took part and some came from as far as London Fields.

Aaron Tomlin (pictured above), from Harrowgate House, was one of the top scorers in his team the E9 Youngsters. Aaron said: “We won last year when I scored all the goals and this year we were runners-up but that didn’t matter too much. Football makes you feel good and more confident. Even when you lose it brings your team together. I really enjoyed it.”
