Whitelake Place Opening

A new housing development has been unveiled in Newton Abbot, offering shared ownership and rented accommodation for local people in the area.

Whitelake Place was unveiled on Friday, offering 73 high quality flats and apartments to local people looking for affordable homes. The development has been made possible thanks to the combined efforts of Sanctuary Shaftesbury, a member of leading housing provider Sanctuary Group, Teignbridge District Council, the Homes and Communities Agency, BBH Architects, developers Leadbitter, and quantity surveyors Randall and Simmonds.

After a brief address from Sanctuary's Head of Development in the region, Mike Santon, Chair of Teignbridge District Council, Sylvia Russell, spoke about the need to continue to provide affordable housing in the area. Guest speaker Colin Molton, Regional Director of the Homes and Communities Agency, then unveiled a plaque, before a tour of show flats.

Situated on the plot of land formerly known as Jetty Marsh, Whitelake Place provides a mixture of high quality accommodation. Comprising three blocks of flats, built to an Ecohomes standard of Very Good, features include a fully-fitted kitchen, balcony - some with views of the local nature reserve - and an advanced heating system which provides residents with highly cost-effective heating facilities in line with Sanctuary’s commitment to energy efficiency.

With attractive communal landscaped gardens, a secure door entry system and undercover allocated parking, the development offers all the amenities to fulfil today’s modern lifestyle.

Neil Clements, Sanctuary’s regional development manager said: “Sanctuary is committed to providing high quality affordable housing in the south west and we have worked very hard with our partners to deliver a scheme that we can all be proud of.

“The site will provide the area with much needed accommodation for local residents and we look forward to welcoming our new tenants into their homes.”

Cllr Ray Frost, Teignbridge Council’s Executive Member for Housing Services said: “This new development is a very welcome step forward in the provision of affordable homes for local people, and we’re very happy to have helped provide them.

“In common with many places there’s a clear need for more affordable housing in Teignbridge, and we’re working hard to help meet the demand. People deserve a good quality, affordable place to call home, and I look forward to seeing people enjoying life at Whitelake Place.”

Paul Munro, Regional Manager of Leadbitter’s South West Housing Division, said: "Leadbitter is delighted to have been involved with the provision of these apartments. We have a proven track record in delivering first class accommodation and have developed extensive expertise in this sector. We constantly strive to gain new knowledge and to fully understand the needs of our clients like the Sanctuary Group, in order to deliver schemes that maximise value, achieve certainty of delivery and exceed expectations."
