Horsing around in Victoria Square scheme

Residents of a Sanctuary Care scheme for 10 adults with learning disabilities enjoyed horsing around during their own mini Royal Ascot day.

Yesterday’s event, which took place in the garden of the scheme in Victoria Square, Lee-on-the-Solent in Hampshire, raised £609 towards the purchase of a new minibus.

Staff borrowed a miniature race track and the residents built and hand painted six wooden horses, which were auctioned off to raise additional funds.

Giant handmade dice were rolled to select the colour of the horse and the number of spaces it was moved around the track and guests placed bets at the in-house bookmakers.

"It was an absolutely brilliant day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it"

There was the usual glamour associated with Royal Ascot – with a fine display of beautiful handmade hats which were entered into a best hat competition – with the scheme’s administrator Maureen Keighley scooping first prize with her fantastic floral display. Maureen’s hat of fresh flowers contained two pints of water and an oasis to keep it fresh throughout the day!

There was also a raffle and homemade cream teas.

Scheme manager Lesley Senior said: “This was the first year that we have held this event so the residents and staff were extremely excited.

“It was an absolutely brilliant day and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

“We are over the moon with the money raised and hope to do a similar event next year.”
