Celebrating five stars in food hygiene scheme

Staff at a Sanctuary Care home are celebrating after scooping five stars in South Oxfordshire District Council’s Scores on the Doors food hygiene scheme.

Watlington and District Nursing Home in Watlington, Oxfordshire received the excellent rating – the highest possible score – following a spot check inspection by environmental health officers.

The home was judged on strict criteria, including food hygiene, structure and confidence in management.

Catering manager Patsy Sanford was thrilled to receive the award from council chairman Malcolm Leonard yesterday at a ceremony at Cornerstone in Didcot, where the council launched the scheme.

"To get five stars they have achieved excellent levels of food hygiene"

She said: “I think it’s wonderful. It’s great news for my team because we all work together and I’m very proud of them.”

The home’s manager Julie Cooper said: “We are delighted – it is great recognition for Patsy and her team – a well deserved award.”

Meanwhile Councillor Dorothy Brown, Portfolio holder for Health and Housing said: “To get five stars they have achieved excellent levels of food hygiene at the time of the inspection and have set standards that we would want other businesses to strive to achieve.”

The residents at the home are also thrilled with the news. One of them - Alfred Brett said: “The food here is very, very good. It’s absolutely lovely.”

The achievement comes just three months after the home received a Healthy Choice Award from the council for food hygiene and the healthy menu choices it offers.

The Scores on the Doors Scheme provides food hygiene ratings for food premises across Oxfordshire and helps members of the public to make informed choices about where they wish to eat or purchase food.
