There's no place like home for Sanctuary thespians

Residents at Ashley House in Bordon were last week treated to a pantomime version of the Wizard of Oz courtesy of staff at the home.

Every year, staff at the residential care home present a pantomime in a fun-filled day. This year’s performance on Wednesday 13th December was watched by residents and their families, Sanctuary managers and local GPs and district nurses. Residents from learning disability homes at Petersfield and Lee-on-the-Solent also saw the show.

Ashley House’s manager Margaret Powell wrote and directed the panto and, along with her colleagues, has been rehearsing since September, often after working eight-hour shifts.

Margaret said: “Although it’s been tiring, it’s been so much fun. It’s so nice for residents and their families to see staff in a different role and this year was an excellent performance once again.”

Wizard of Oz pantomime is enjoyed by all at Ashley House in Bordon

Ashley House’s dining room was transformed into a theatre with curtains, lights and even a snow machine. As well as the famous characters of Dorothy, the Tin Man, Lion and Scarecrow, there were guest appearances from Superman and even a funky chicken!

Residents helped out behind the scenes, making flowers for Munchkin Land, a rainbow, hats for the rainbow children, played by employees’ sons and daughters and, most importantly, the yellow brick road.

The message ‘there’s no place like home’ is central to the Wizard of Oz and it certainly rings true for Ashley House, which provides care for 34 residents in a homely and safe environment.

Margaret said: “The pantomime concludes that you do not need a wealth of knowledge, a big heart or to be particularly courageous to be happy and that you can find your heart’s desire right here at home. I think that is very important because our residents are very special, all with their own stories to tell and every single one of them is unique.

“As the wizard says, a heart is not judged by how much you love but by how much you are loved by others.”
