Everything in the garden was blooming lovely!

The scorching hot weather was not kind to gardeners as they struggled to keep their displays looking good but the standard of entries for our annual competition was as high as ever.

It all meant that judges Peter Jackson and Peter Blackburne-Maze had a very difficult task when they went out and about to tour the gardens.

Peter Jackson was the judge for the Best Whole Garden, Best Communal Garden, Best Vegetable Garden and Best Patio sections and Peter Blackburne-Maze judged the Best Front and Back Gardens and also picked the Best Newcomer.

Picture above shows the winner of Best Whole Garden of Donald Griss.

The sweltering hot weather in the lead up to judging day did not help our entrants as Peter Jackson explained: “Lots of flowers do not like heat but considering the growing conditions, they have all done very well.”

And Peter Blackburne-Maze added: “This has been a very trying year for gardeners but the overall standard has been excellent. Everyone who entered should be congratulated for their efforts.”

The Hereward Challenge Cup was awarded to Militia Way, our Sheltered Scheme in Ely. Their very colourful floral display certainly caught the eye of our judges and also won praise from the judges of the Anglia in Bloom competition when they visited Ely recently.

This special award was donated by one of our former Board Members, Cllr John Palmer, and is awarded at the judges’ discretion.
