Going up in the world

A traditional ceremony marked a major step forward in a £3.7 million project to provide homes in Suffolk for older people. Exning Court at Exning near Newmarket, will offer 34 self contained flats to rent when it opens next year.

Hereward, in partnership with The George Gibson Foundation Trust, the Housing Corporation, Suffolk County Council and Forest Heath District Council, is building Exning Court.

The MHA Care Group has been contracted by Suffolk County Council to provide care at the scheme.

Topping Out ceremony marks a major step forward at Exning Court.

Workers from the contractors, Jackson Construction, have been on site since the beginning of the year and a Topping Out ceremony has just been held when Suffolk ale was poured over a corner of the building. Several guests went up in the world and climbed a ladder onto a platform to carry out the ceremony.

Exning Court is a Very Sheltered/Extra Care scheme built around a courtyard with a pergola and water feature. All the flats will be equipped to the highest standards and other facilities will include a number of bright, communal lounges and a conservatory.

The land at Exning was gifted to Hereward by The George Gibson Foundation Trust on a long lease for a nominal sum.

Geoff Moore, Head of Supported Housing at Hereward, said: “Older people still want to live independent lives but also want security and help at hand. Exning Court will give them all this.”
