The best in care

The very best in care and facilities for frail, older people, will be available at a special scheme due to open in Exning next year. Hereward Housing, in partnership with The George Gibson Foundation Trust, the Housing Corporation, Suffolk County Council and Forest Heath District Council, is building Exning Court.

The £3.7 million very sheltered/extra care scheme, will offer 34 self contained flats to rent, all with fitted carpets, curtains and lampshades. A fridge/freezer and microwave will be fitted in each kitchen and other facilities will include a large communal lounge and dining area and a 24-hour door entry system to give additional security.

£3.7 million very sheltered / extra care scheme to open in 2006.

Very sheltered housing is ideal for people who need a higher level of support than can be offered in sheltered housing but for whom residential care would not offer enough independence. Geoff Moore, Head of Supported Housing at Hereward, said: “It is a home of their own for tenants but staff are on site 24 hours a day to provide care and support according to individual needs. People can live independently but still be part of a small community.”

A major step forward for the scheme was taken when a turf cutting ceremony was held at the site in Cotton Road, Exning on 30 January 2006.
