New flats are opened

A development costing over £400,000 will help cut the housing waiting list in Fenland. The six, two bedroom flats on Station Road, Chatteris, were officially opened on 31 October. They are part of a larger Freshwater Estates development on the site and were bought by Hereward.

The total cost was £430,000 and the Housing Corporation provided a grant of £180,000. Hereward has worked in partnership with Fenland Council who have nominated the residents for the flats and they are due to move in at the end of November.

Councillor Kit Owen, the Portfolio holder for Housing on Fenland District Council performed the opening ceremony for the flats which are the first of the Housing Corporation homes to be finished in Fenland this financial year.

Alan Lewin, Hereward’s Director of Operations, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to provide these much needed homes in Fenland.”

A £430,000 development between Hereward Housing and Fenland Council opens with the unveiling of six flats on Station Road, Chatteris.

Mr Lewin added: “We are already involved in Fenland through our Jubilee Court Extra Care Scheme in March. We also provide homes for teenage parents and a refuge for victims of domestic violence.

“We have set ourselves a target of providing 350 new affordable properties every year by 2008 and we very much hope that we will be able to work again with Fenland Council in the future.”

The spacious flats are in a three storey block with a communal entrance and communal gardens. They will be fully carpeted when the new residents move in and there is also allocated parking.

Rents for the flats are £59.95 a week and they are on course to receive a “Good” Eco Homes rating as they are fitted with low energy lightbulbs, highly efficient boilers and insulation.
