Nick Abbey, Hereward’s Chief Executive, said: “Even with this investment we will still not be able to improve the homes to the standard we would like or provide any additional facilities.”
Mr Abbey added: “We believe that by redeveloping Walsingham Way we can provide residents with better quality homes in an attractive environment.
“Redevelopment will allow us to offer residents a variety of different types of new homes to suit their differing needs plus new community facilities.
“We want to build high quality modern homes but in a traditional style that will complement Ely’s heritage.”
Under the Hereward plan, the flats would be replaced by around 160 new homes including one and two bedroom flats and two and three bedroom houses, built to the highest energy efficient standards with fully fitted kitchens and carpeted throughout.
There would also be a 60 flat Extra Care sheltered housing scheme to provide housing with care for frail, older people and a separate resource centre for community activities.
All existing Walsingham Way residents would be offered new homes as part of the development.
Mr Abbey said: “Hereward has a strong community focus and we are very much committed to working with residents on this project. I believe the redevelopment of Walsingham Way offers local people an opportunity to improve the quality of their homes and environment for the future.”
