Communal secret garden created

Celebrations marked the culmination of two major projects to improve facilities at schemes in Rainham, Kent.

Thompson Close saw a grassed area transformed into a long-needed youth area including a kick wall and basketball play area.

The project was funded by Groundwork Medway Swale, Sanctuary Housing South East and Barclays sitesavers. Representatives from all of these organisations attended the opening day.

A grand opening, including an Easter egg hunt, marked the transformation of waste land at Sunderland Drive that had become something of a dumping ground.

A beautiful space that can be enjoyed
and shared by young and old.

This is now a communal ‘secret garden’ created with joint funding from Groundwork Medway Swale, Sanctuary South East and Lloyds TSB. The ground was completely cleared by volunteers, turf was laid and fruit trees, flowers and shrubs were planted.

Residents from Macklands House, Sanctuary’s sheltered scheme in Rainham, attended the opening wearing Easter bonnets and provided refreshments donated by the local Tesco store. Children donned white hooded boiler suits and armed with cans of spray paint filled a once unattractive wall with a variety of decorative insects.
