Sanctuary is accomplished in the regeneration and development of council stock transfers. Here are some examples:

Shiregreen, Sheffield

A recently formed Sanctuary subsidiary, Shiregreen Community Homes, is embarking on a major works and management programme covering over 2,500 homes at Shiregreen, Sheffield. Council tenants voted overwhelmingly in favour of the stock transfer - clear evidence of their confidence in Sanctuary’s ability to deliver.

With work underway on Sanctuary's £71 million investment programme these are exciting times for the residents of Shiregreen. They are looking forward to the modernisation of their homes and the surrounding environment in addition to the high quality neighbourhood management services that Sanctuary provides.

Hackney Regeneration Project

Sanctuary's regeneration scheme in Hackney, East London, won the prestigious National Home Improvement Council's award for Best Housing Association Modernisation in 2005.

The scheme involved 1,200 homes which were transferred to Sanctuary from the local authority in 1997 following a successful ballot of tenants. We subsequently worked with residents (who have an ongoing and significant management role on the estates) to deliver a £40m programme of refurbishment to their homes and the surrounding environment.
Some five years later, the estate benefits from improved management, maintenance and estate services.

The Ardler Estate, Dundee

Sanctuary Scotland worked with Dundee City Council and residents to redevelop a former council estate following the transfer of some 1,500 homes to the Association in 2000. In 2006 it won a Scottish Quality in Planning Award and British Urban Regeneration Association Award for the best community-led regeneration project.

The regeneration project involved the demolition of the majority of these former council properties and replacement with high-quality low rise homes to rent along with some for outright and subsidised sale. Sanctuary also provided new retail and community facilities.

Sanctuary Scotland and the other partners on the scheme set up and funded the Ardler Village Trust – a community development organisation aimed at securing the long term prosperity of the area.

Castle Vale, Birmingham

Sanctuary was selected in 1995 to work in partnership with the Castle Vale Action Housing Trust on the largest post-war housing estate in Birmingham.

Sanctuary helped set up the Castle Vale Community Housing Association to assist in the regeneration of this estate and acted as a Development Agent for the Housing Action Trust. Over the last ten years, 2,000 high rise homes have been demolished and replaced with high quality low rise flats and houses, all of which have been transferred to the new community based association which is thriving.

Says Wendy Walsh, Chair of the CVCHA: "Sanctuary gave us a unique opportunity to take control at Castle Valeand manage the delivery of our services. We now employ 70 staff, manage 2,500 homes and have an annual turnover of £5 million per year."

Anderston, Glasgow

Sanctuary Scotland was selected in September 2003 as the preferred partner to develop a regeneration solution for over 480 properties in Anderston, Glasgow.

The homes were transferred to Sanctuary Scotland in June 2005 following a successful ballot. This project also envisages significant investment in the community including retail facilities and extensive environmental improvements.
