Sanctuary Scotland regeneration scheme wins award

Sanctuary Scotland ’s Ardler regeneration scheme has won a prestigious national award.

Ardler Village in Dundee is one of only eight schemes to be recognised by the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA) for best practice in the field. The announcement comes just months after the project won a Scottish Quality in Planning Award.

BURA judged that ‘Ardler Village is setting a standard for area-based regeneration in Dundee and beyond’ and Sanctuary Scotland Housing Association have ‘a genuine commitment to empowering local residents to enable them to play their part in the process of change’.

Sanctuary Scotland began a seven-year redevelopment project in 2001 to modernise the Ardler estate in partnership with Dundee City Council and Communities Scotland. The majority of the former council properties were demolished and replaced with high quality low rise homes and retail and community facilities. Between 1980 and 1997, the area’s population fell by almost 50 per cent but now Ardler is a thriving community, where residents are central to the decision making process.

Seven year redevelopment project wins British Urban Regeneration Association prestigious award.

From the outset, Sanctuary Scotland worked closely with local tenants through the Ardler Steering Group who had an active role in developing the Ardler masterplan. Community involvement has continued with the Ardler Village Trust – a community group that promotes social and economic regeneration in the area.

Director of Sanctuary Scotland Gordon Laurie said: “Everyone at Sanctuary Scotland is delighted that the regeneration of Ardler has been recognised by such a prestigious organisation as BURA. Receiving this award reflects great credit on everyone who has been involved in the planning and delivery of the project. I am particularly pleased that the role of the Ardler community has been recognised.”

Jon Ladd, Chief Executive of BURA, said: “We not only had a record response to our call for entries but our independent assessment panel has been amazed by the outstanding quality of submissions.”

Scotland boasts five of the winners, with two from England and one from Northern Ireland.
