Riding to Roman Ridge on an e-bike

After starting work as Retirement Living Housing Manager at Sanctuary’s Roman Ridge scheme in Sheffield in 2021, Simon Ford quickly identified an opportunity for a significant change to his commute. Having previously spent hours in his car managing various housing schemes across Derbyshire, working at Roman Ridge reduced Simon’s need to travel. As a result, Simon sold his car and bought an e-bike, making crossing the hills of Sheffield on a daily basis a happy reality.
Rickshaw rides down memory lane for our Queens residents
CASE STUDY
Working with volunteer ‘pilots’ in the community, the scheme enables our care residents to enjoy regular cycle rides on the Prestwick promenade. While the pilot pedals the speciality three-wheeled bike – with the driver situated behind the passenger seats – the residents can relax while taking in the fresh sea air and coastal views across to the Isle of Arran.
Car Sharing in Scarborough

Outside of busy cities, public transport options can be limited. At Jazz Court scheme in Scarborough, links to public transport are not always convenient. Helen Denton and Hayley Jones have been working together for 6 years and have found that, in the face of few public transport options, car sharing is a convenient way for them both to get to work.
Supporting Viv to travel sustainably and independently

When Vivienne moved into Jazz Court, her learning disability and epilepsy had affected her confidence to the extent that she found herself unable to complete a lot of tasks without support. As she began to receive a care package from Sanctuary Supported Living’s on-site care team, she was supported with regular household tasks like laundry, cooking, and shopping.

In 2019, Donna Hufton started weighing up both the cost and environmental impact of her two-car household. As her husband began working remotely, they decided to take the leap and not only get rid of one car but change their remaining car for an electric vehicle.
Cycle Recycling

Every summer, students leave tonnes of personal belongings behind when they move out of halls. Preventing all of these items from going to landfill is an ongoing challenge and Sanctuary Students try to recycle as much as possible. This summer, Lilian Knowles House in London had a clear out of bikes left behind in the bike store and donated 28 bikes to the Sue Ryder charity.
