Community safety and infrastructure

We aim to ensure that our communities are safe places to live and are equipped with the infrastructure they need to shape their aims and aspirations. We are particularly interested in projects which promote opportunities for people to play a positive role in their community, to design community-led initiatives, and build the capacity of local groups and charities to provide them.

Case study: Great Grimsbury Halloween Party

Grimsbury Community Association

Project Aim

To throw a party for residents in Grimsbury, providing fun and sociable activities, helping people get out of their homes and into the community and ensuring they were not alone or anxious on Halloween.

Grimsbury Community Association arranged a Halloween themed party.

Thanks to decorations made by Grimsbury Youth Group, the venue was suitably spooky and Rotary Club members provided music and led the singing at the party.

There was plenty of food to go round thanks to donations from the Co-op and Tesco Express and decorated cupcakes provided by Grimsbury Youth Action.

Many residents said they usually felt anxious on Halloween due to trick-or-treating and antisocial behaviour and that they enjoyed the opportunity to be out of the house and attend the fun-filled party with others.

Organisers said residents thoroughly enjoyed the party and many asked if another could be held next year.

Feedback was collected at the event, with all responses positive and keen to see similar events organised in the future.

Residents said the party had made them feel happier and less isolated, with many saying Halloween is a time they normally feel anxious.

Good friends Bet Carson and Beryl Washburn, who are both in their 90s, do not get out often.

They both arrived right at the start and stayed until the very end, taking part in singing and cupcake decorating activities.
