A Sanctuary Housing resident and group leader in Torbay is helping to shape the services offered to young people in the area.
Amanda Martin is founder of the Chelston Action Group (CAG), a community organisation which has been instrumental in establishing a range of groups and clubs, including a community café, parent and toddler group and a youth club.
CAG was set up nearly three years ago, with support from Sanctuary Housing’s community investment fund, after Amanda moved into her Sanctuary home in Chelston, Torquay.
She said: “I’d moved in with my young daughter and felt straight away that there were not enough local activities happening for children and young people so I started looking at what I could do to change that.”
Amanda listened to what fellow residents wanted and linked up with Sanctuary Housing’s local neighbourhood team to make them happen.
CAG and Amanda have since been rewarded for their contributions to the Torbay community, scooping the Partnership accolade at Sanctuary’s Torbay Community Star Awards in 2016, with Amanda herself winning one of the awards in the 2018 programme.
Amanda added: “I’d like to think that I’ve helped to give a voice to local residents and of course I’m a local resident too.
“Since setting up CAG, I’ve got to know lots of useful contacts, so I’m really pleased to use my skills to help to make positive changes in my neighbourhood.”
