50 years of Blacon Youth Football Club celebrated at community Festival

13 July 2015

The biggest community-led festival in Chester is being held this weekend with memories of Blacon being this year’s theme.

Where and when is the Blacon Festival being held?

Taking place at Queen Elizabeth Fields on Blacon Avenue on Saturday 4 July from 11am to 3pm, the annual event is now entering its 22 year.

The Blacon Festival is organised by Avenue Services

Organised by local social enterprise Avenue Services, which aims to improve local services and facilities and enhance the quality of life in Blacon, the Festival will open with a parade from all five Blacon Primary Schools starting at The New Enterprise Centre. To celebrate 50 years of Blacon Youth Football Club the school children will be dressed in football kits with referees whistles. There will also be a saxophone playing the theme to Match of the Day, with the parade finishing at Queen Elizabeth Fields to officially open this year’s event.

Activities on offer at the Blacon Festival

Visitors will be able to enjoy an exciting array of attractions on the day including re-enactments of Viking battles, football skills demonstrations from Chester FC, the opportunity to have a go at an army assault course, guide dog skills demonstration, children’s entertainment and live music. The festival will also feature a Best of Blacon competition, where cooks and gardeners will be judged for the best cake, chutneys and home grown vegetables, as well as flower arrangements.

Further things to do at the Blacon Festival

Other activities available include the chance to learn circus skills, to take part in group Zumba classes and there will be community stalls, pony trap rides and a bouncy castle.

Paul Knight, Head of Avenue Services, said: “There are lots of new events at the festival this year which, as always, will be a fun day out for all the family. We’d like to encourage members of the community to come along, see what’s on offer and join in the celebrations for the Blacon.”
