Inspirational residents who make a positive difference to their local community have been honoured for their hard work and dedication.
More than 200 people packed into the Concorde Centre, in Kingsmead Way, Hackney, for the third annual Legends of Kingsmead celebration.
The event was founded by Bod Aiyede in 2016 as a memorial service to pay tribute to his late father and brother, as well as other residents from the Kingsmead estate who have passed away.
It was such a success that Mr Aiyede decided to make it an annual event, not only remembering loved ones but also paying tribute to residents who make a significant contribution to everyday life in Kingsmead.
This year’s celebration, supported by Sanctuary Housing and Hackney Marsh Partnership, saw residents enjoy free food and live music before the award recipients were revealed by special guest Simon Lawson, of Lawsons Buildings Merchants.
Winners included Marie-Claude Herod, former volunteer manager of the Wally Foster Community Centre, for her dedicated service to the community, and Renford Forgaty, who managed security at the Wally Foster for 10 years and has organised security at each Legend of Kingsmead event.
My Aiyede said: “Legends of Kingsmead is unique in bringing residents of all ages, and from different backgrounds and cultures, together to remember our loved ones and share in a celebration of all the positive work taking place in our community.
“We were delighted so many people attended and helped us to celebrate the achievements of all our very deserving winners.”
Toby Moore, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, added: “Residents are at the heart of our communities, and we were keen to support an event celebrating their efforts and all the fantastic work that is taking place in Kingsmead.”
This project was part-funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
