Shiregreen residents were joined by the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Talib Hussain, to celebrate their green success in Sanctuary Housing’s Shiregreen Garden Competition 2015.

Garden competition achievements

The event commended the green achievements of winners in the garden competition, which was assessed by an independent panel of judges.

Top Greenest Garden

Coming first in the Greenest Garden category was Janusz Michalak, whose prize-winning patch included features reminiscent of an English country cottage garden.

Winning Best Smaller Garden and Original Garden

Tony Young came top in the Best Original Garden category which made great use of the space with a fantastic variety of flowers and vegetables, while winners of Best Smaller Garden, Andy Saunders and Louise Brown, used colour and plants to make imaginative use of their garden’s nooks and crannies, with a striking water feature on display.

National Garden vouchers

Each winner of the three categories has been presented with a £30 National Garden voucher and also received a special card in recognition of their garden success.

Janusz Michalak said: “I couldn’t believe it when I received the news that I had won in the Garden Competition. I am extremely proud and it is great to know that other people appreciate my garden as much as I do.”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager for Shiregreen, Sophie Lejeune-Peggie, added: “It’s always fantastic to see the effort and pride that Shiregreen residents take in maintaining their lovely gardens.

“Our garden competition is another way of rewarding those people who help keep Shiregreen looking great.”

Cllr Hussain added: “It was wonderful to see the gardens and be involved in celebrating the hard work that goes into them. I would like to thank everyone who entered and say well done to them, with special congratulations to all the winners.”

This competition was funded by Sanctuary Group’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
