The celebrations were in full swing as thousands of families enjoyed a fun-filled day at the annual Blacon Festival.

Organised by local social enterprise Avenue Services and now in its 24th year, the festival saw more than 2,000 people come together on Queen Elizabeth Fields to celebrate life in their local community.

Opened by Chester MP Chris Matheson, this year’s event was 1960s-themed and featured a wide variety of attractions and entertainment.

As well as browsing more than 40 stalls from Chester companies, charities and voluntary groups, visitors enjoyed live music and dance performances, fun fair rides and a very popular dog show.

A fancy dress competition saw lots of chic and colourful costumes on show, with Yvonne Davies taking the prize for the best outfit. There was also a prize for the best-dressed stall, which was won by Ambito.

Chris Matheson MP said: “It’s always a pleasure to open the festival and to spend time with Blacon residents celebrating their wonderful local community.

“The event is a central part of that strong community spirit in Blacon and always brings so much enjoyment to people of all ages. I look forward to it continuing for many more years to come.”

Paul Knight, Head of Avenue Services, added: “The festival has been a huge success and it was great to see so many people enjoying themselves and such fantastic community spirit on display.

“We’d like to thank everyone who attended or helped organise the event and look forward to seeing you all again next year, when the festival will be celebrating its 25th anniversary.”

Avenue Services, which is a not-for-profit organisation, is a joint venture between Sanctuary Group and Cheshire West and Chester Council.
