Female residents in Shiregreen are being invited to take part in a new programme of self-defence classes designed to empower them to become more streetwise and active.
Taking place at Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre, the new classes are being organised as part of Sanctuary Housing’s Energise Shiregreen programme.
Self-defence classes available
Open to females over the age of 14 years old, the 12-week programme, which is being run by the Academy of Self Defence, will start on Tuesday 13 June at 6pm – 7pm.
Those attending the classes will learn practical and streetwise self-defence skills while greatly improving their fitness, strength and mobility.
“Empower our residents”
Melanie King, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager for Shiregreen, said: “These classes will not only offer self-defence advice and techniques but will also empower our residents to take part and to develop new skills to help them live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.
“We hope that residents will benefit from taking part in an activity that not only gets them active but also sees them come together with other people in the community.”
Sanctuary’s Love Sport programme
Energise Shiregreen is part of Sanctuary’s wider Love Sport programme, in partnership with Sport England, which is taking place in neighbourhoods across the country and aims to engage more than 2,250 residents in sport and fitness activities.
The sessions ran from Tuesday 13 June to Tuesday 11 July and will then on Tuesday 5 September to Tuesday 17 October.
