Free football sessions kick off in the Bay

28 November 2018
Football sessions for over 35s will kick off in Paignton from 3 December.

Torbay residents are set to prove that age is no barrier to starting a new sport, as football sessions for over 35s kick off in Paignton.

Funded by Sanctuary Housing, local organisation Sports & Fitness4u will be delivering walking football training to residents aged 35 and over, with sessions running every Monday and Wednesday from 3 December.

The programme is open to males and females, with the aim of improving both the physical and mental health of those participating.

Women’s football

Sanctuary’s partnership with Sports & Fitness4u is also seeing the launch of women’s football sessions for local females aged 16 and over.

Running on Tuesday evenings, the training will include mentoring opportunities for those attending, helping to improve self-confidence and boost personal development.

Free for Love Sport

All sessions are free and will include healthy refreshments for the participants.

The football workshops form part of Sanctuary’s Love Sport initiative, which is taking place in neighbourhoods around the country and aims to engage more than 2,250 residents in sport and fitness activities.

“Everyone can have fun and get fit through football”

Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Lynne Roberts, said: “Through these sessions, we are aiming to highlight that everyone can have fun and get fit through football, regardless of age or gender.

“The Love Sport programme has already seen dozens of Torbay residents improve their physical and mental health and this football training is set to do the same.”

Simon Walker, from Sports & Fitness4u, added: “We are really excited to kick off these sessions. We are hoping to start a walking football league and this training will be instrumental in helping us to establish that.”

For more information or to book a place, contact Simon Walker by emailing sportfitness4u@aol.com. Residents can also just turn up to their preferred session.

Sanctuary’s financial commitment to the five-year programme has been matched by Sport England, through National Lottery investment, to help deliver the sessions.
