Residents in Shiregreen can keep fit and healthy with a programme of free sport and activity sessions.
Funded by Sanctuary Housing, the classes feature a wide variety of activities suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.
Hatfield Academy, in Hatfield House Lane, is hosting a range of weekly sessions including Zumba, boxing, family fitness and Popercise – an innovative dance fitness programme featuring moves created by children and young people.
And residents looking for something more relaxing can take part in weekly Mindful Movement classes at St James and St Christopher Church, in Bellhouse Road.
The sessions involve gentle stretching and breathing exercises and are aimed at people who are not able to take part in more physically challenging workouts. Participants also receive a free CD from instructor Kathryn Rogers to help them continue practising exercises at home.
The activities form part of Sanctuary’s wider Love Sport initiative, which is taking place in neighbourhoods around the country and aims to engage more than 2,250 residents in sport and fitness activities.
Sanctuary’s financial commitment to the five-year programme has been matched by Sport England, through National Lottery investment, to help deliver the sessions.
Paula Smith, communication and engagement officer at Hatfield Academy, said: “These sessions are all about showing people how easy and enjoyable keeping fit and taking part in regular exercise can be.
“As well as the physical benefits, they also offer a wonderful opportunity to develop confidence, make new friends and engage with others in a positive and sociable environment.”
Melanie King, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, added: “Love Sport aims to help people get active and try new things and we are delighted to be offering such a varied range of activities to our residents in Shiregreen.”
