Housing officer in Torbay shares her experience on customer service

Sophie Sandhu, housing officer for Sanctuary Housing, has shared her experiences of valuable customer service to job-shadowers through one-to-one engagement with residents and colleagues as part of National Customer Service Week.

The 29-year-old has been using her role to help improve the lives of residents and build strong communities across a 400 mile area in the south west covering Newton Abbot, Totnes, Brixham, Dartmouth and Ivybridge.

Sophie, who has recently furthered her Plymouth University degree by successfully completing a QCF Certificate in Housing Level Three, delivers comprehensive services that fit the needs of the local families, older people and individuals within the 600 property-filled patch.

The wide range of resident-focused services carried out is shaped by the local communities, making no working day the same. Duties can include finding the right home for families, to supporting income meetings for money handling advice.

Sophie said: “I thrive on helping people and love to see the ripple effect of how my efforts have improved a neighbourhood or made a family proud of their home again.”

Sophie joined the national housing provider back in 2009 as a tenancy support officer. With support from Sanctuary, she reached her current position by working hard and also volunteering to support the housing team in her spare time to gain valuable on-the-job training. After three hardworking years, her goal was reached and she’s been offering excellent customer service throughout that time.

Sophie continued: “Throughout all my years at Sanctuary, I’ve always tried to deliver the best possible service. A story that always remains at the forefront of my mind was the rehoming of an elderly lady. I supported her and her entire family throughout the process and the look on her face when she found a bungalow she loved made it all worthwhile.”

Sanctuary’s area manager for Torbay, Katie Poole, added: “Sophie has played an influential role in the team and with the other five housing officers in Torbay, carries out fantastic service to the best of her ability.”
