Lantern parade to light up Shiregreen

Families are being encouraged to light up Shiregreen in a new community art project that culminates in a sparkling lantern parade.

Sheffield-based arts organisation Ignite Imaginations and Sanctuary Housing have teamed up to organise the free community-led event on Sunday 4 December.

Residents will brighten up the winter night by walking with hand-made lanterns from Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre, in Westnall Road, at 4pm to Shiregreen United Reformed Church, in Valentine Crescent. They can then enjoy a bumper session of craft activities, music and refreshments at the Church from 5pm.

In weeks leading up to the parade, free community workshops will be held for families, where an artist helps them make lanterns to use at the event. Youth clubs, scout groups and local schools, including St Patrick’s Primary School and Hartley Brook Academy, are also involving children in lantern-making activities.

Ignite Imaginations – formerly Art in the Park - encourages vibrant and creative communities in Sheffield and has secured support from the Big Lottery Fund’s Celebrate programme for this project. In addition, support from Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund has been able to double the hours of workshops in the community.

Melanie King, Sanctuary Housing’s neighbourhood partnerships manager for Shiregreen, said: “We hope this exciting community project will bring people together from across Shiregreen to get creative and then celebrate with a magical lantern parade. Residents can join in the parade at any point along the route.”

Panni Loh, project co-ordinator from Ignite Imaginations, added: “We are delighted to have secured funding from the Big Lottery Fund Celebrate programme for this lantern parade as we strive to provide unusual, inspiring and innovative experiences for communities of all ages in Sheffield.”

Free lantern-making workshops are open to all residents and take place at Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre on:

  • Thursday 24 November from 3.15pm to 5.15pm
  • Saturday 26 November from 11am to 1pm
  • Thursday 1 December from 3.15pm to 5.15pm
  • Saturday 3 December from 11am to 1pm.

Other workshops are at Shiregreen United Reformed Church on:

  • Tuesday 22 November from 4pm to 6pm
  • Tuesday 29 November from 4pm to 6pm.

Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund supports activities that benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
