Local Hackney award winner celebrates 100th birthday

6 May 2015

A Sanctuary Housing community award winner has celebrated her 100th birthday at a special party with family and friends.

Cissy Brine was born in Marlow Road in 1915 and has lived in Hackney her whole life. She has four children, 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren.

At Sanctuary Housing’s 2014 community awards a special accolade for outstanding contribution to the community was given to Cissy. Then aged 98, the trophy recognised her dedication and hard work in running the popular Morningside over 50s club.

Cissy has been a member of the club since she was 73 and joined the committee at the age of 88. For the past three years she has taken over responsibility for running the club.

Her dedication to the local Hackney community and milestone birthday was celebrated in style at a party which saw guests come together for an evening of music and food, with 100-year-old Cissy enjoying dancing and sampling the traditional East End London dish of jellied eels.

Cissy commented: “It was absolutely wonderful, such a lovely turnout. I’ll carry on running the club while I can!”

Cissy’s landmark birthday also saw another celebration at her local Tesco store.

Growing up, Cissy has fond memories of shopping at the market stalls in Well Street and Tesco, which was originally founded by Jack Cohen in 1919. Cissy knew Mr Cohen and his daughter well and has continued to shop at the stalls and supermarket which was built in 1970.

Being one of their most regular customers, the supermarket was keen to celebrate Cissy’s big day and invited her to the store to be presented with flowers and champagne.

Jo Revett, Sanctuary Housing’s neighbourhood partnerships manager and guest at the family party, added: “Cissy is an inspiration – she is dedicated to keeping the club running and has so much enthusiasm! It was fantastic to see her surrounded by her extensive family to celebrate her birthday.”
