Mature and Active provide exercise classes to Burwell residents

18 January 2016

A programme of exercise classes at a local sports centre is providing the best possible support to the over 55s in Burwell.

Mature and Active sessions

Burwell Community Sports Centre, with funding from Sanctuary Housing, has purchased specialist chairs for their Mature and Active sessions, an initiative from East Cambridgeshire District Council.

What do the sessions include?

The fun sessions aim to increase health and exercise for the over 55s. The strength, balance and mobility classes improve the participants’ ability to carry out everyday tasks, as well as targeting falls prevention.

The recent purchase of chairs allows the classes to include even more residents with a wider range of exercises and they have also been incorporated into other classes recently, including carpet bowls.

What do current participants say?

Mary Patrick, current participant, said: “Exercise is not only for the young and healthy. We work hard, play hard and laugh a lot. At the end of the class, we all feel better for it and our tutor is so enthusiastic you cannot help but enjoy it. It is great fun, why not come along and see for yourself.”

How can I join the Mature and Active sessions?

Residents interested in attending the classes should contact the centre on 01638 742125. There is a £3 charge for the classes, which includes tea and coffee.
