New family yoga classes limbering up Shiregreen

16 March 2017

Free family yoga sessions have been launched to boost fitness and reduce stress among Shiregreen residents.

The new weekly classes at Hatfield Academy, in Hatfield House Lane, are funded by Sanctuary Housing as part of Energise Shiregreen.

Yoga sessions are set to help selected Hatfield pupils and their families feel more limber and relaxed while also encouraging them to be more active over 12 weeks from 20 March to 3 July.

It follows on from popular Mindful Movement community sessions, which attracted dozens of older residents to stretch and do breathing exercises at Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre and the new Sycamore Heights scheme for over 55s at Keppel Place.

Melanie King, Sanctuary Housing’s neighbourhood partnerships manager for Shiregreen said: “Yoga is a good way get more active through gentle exercises, for those who may be deterred by high energy sports. We hope these new sessions will encourage and support Shiregreen families to lead happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.”

Energise Shiregreen is part of Sanctuary’s wider Love Sport programme, in partnership with Sport England, which is taking place in neighbourhoods across the country and aims to engage more than 2,250 residents in sport and fitness activities.

Sanctuary’s commitment to the five-year programme has been match-funded by Sport England, through National Lottery investment, to help deliver the sport and activity sessions.

Anyone interested in registering an interest in family yoga sessions should contact the Shiregreen neighbourhood team at neighbourhoods@sanctuary-housing.co.uk
