New lift brings benefits for Sanctuary residents in Barnstaple

A new external lift at a housing for older people scheme in Devon has made it safer and easier for residents to get out and about and enjoy the local area.

Sanctuary Housing has installed the lift at its Mill Court scheme in Barnstaple in response to requests from residents.

Previously, residents exited Mill Court onto Mill Road – a busy street with lots of traffic and no pavement in places.

Now however, they can use the new lift to easily access Rolle Quay, which offers a picturesque and much quieter riverside walk to the town centre. This route was previously only accessible via a flight of steps unsuitable for less mobile residents.

Mill Court resident Sam Foden, who had asked us to investigate easier access to Rolle Quay, was the first person to use the new lift during its official opening ceremony.

Mr Foden said: “It gives me enormous satisfaction to see this fantastic new lift in use. It gives residents easy access to a riverside road with numerous benches and makes it much safer and easier for us to get into town.”

Lorna Woodland, Sanctuary’s Housing Officer, commented: “We’re committed to listening to our residents and doing all we can to make our communities safe and pleasant places to live.

“I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to install the new lift at Mill Court. It will make a huge difference for our residents and it’s great to see them using it and enjoying the benefits it brings.”
