Householders from across Torbay learned how to tackle everyday DIY chores at an interactive Sanctuary Repairs Roadshow attended by Adrian Sanders MP.
The DIY roadshow, led by Sanctuary Housing and its maintenance provider Sanctuary Maintenance, was designed to share basic skills and top tips with residents allowing them to handle simple DIY tasks and give them greater independence.
Equipped with everything from tradesmen’s tools to the kitchen sink, maintenance operatives delivered practical demonstrations covering a range of projects from how to fix leaking taps to repairing cracked tiles.
The 90 minute workshop in Torbay, part of a roadshow in the South West, was both fun and interactive and at the end of the session, residents were tested on their newfound skills. Winners were presented with a complete toolkit donated by the managed services team of Travis Perkins Group.
Adrian Sanders MP, who saw first-hand just how valuable the residents found the workshop, said: “It was great to see Sanctuary’s Repairs Roadshow in action. The operatives were fantastic and showed residents how to tackle the most common housing repairs in an engaging and manageable way.”
Sanctuary Housing resident, Kaff Sowden, added: “The workshop was brilliant and I’m really pleased I decided to attend. When it came to DIY, I thought I knew it all but I’ve walked away with some top tips that I can use at home and at the community centre I volunteer in.”
Rose Harrison, Sanctuary Housing resident continued: “The repairs lesson was really interesting and Sanctuary Maintenance operatives were able to answer all my DIY questions.”
Helen Harding-Bentley, Sanctuary’s operations manager in the South West, said: “It was fantastic to see our residents out in force engaging with maintenance operatives, housing staff and each another. The workshop was a great success and many of our residents left the session planning their next DIY masterpiece!”
Martin Daymond, operation manager for Sanctuary Maintenance, concluded: “We are delighted that by teaching a few common repairs, we can give residents greater confidence and independence in their home.
“Many housing repairs are easy to solve if you’re shown how and it was great to be able to help Torbay residents in this way.”
